I ChingThe I Ching (pronounced E Ching), also known as 'The Book of Changes' is one of the most ancient manuscripts known to man. It is from this book that Feng Shui, Nine Star Ki (aka Feng Shui Astrology) and Directionology sprang forth. The book has been used down through the ages by diviners seeking answers to their questions. The I Ching is based around 8 depictions called Trigrams which are made up of Yin and Yang line elements. These trigrams are attributed to Fu Hsi (see the history of the Lo Shu for more on this) around 5,000 years ago.
The I Ching HexagramsThe I Ching uses two trigrams stacked one upon the other forming a Hexagram, the varying combinations allow for valueable insights to the answers of diviners questions. Through the stacking of the 8 trigrams, a possible 64 hexagrams can be constructed. The interpretation of these hexagrams has taken place down through the ages with the last and perhaps most well known work being that of the great Confucius about 2500 years ago. Here, for example, we see the Mother and Middle Son trigrams stacked one on top of the other to give us Hexagram No 7 from the I Ching:
